Winter Hitting, Pitching and Catching Clinics for UAJBA Players

We are expanding our clinic sessions this winter to include pitching and catching in addition to the hitting clinics we did in 2017. The hitting sessions will be the same set up as last year where you will sign up for individual sessions based on your player's age. The pitching and catching clinics will be a little bit different in that you will sign up for a series of six sessions that you will attend each week. One sign-up gets you all six sessions.

As we did last year, we built the hitting clinic costs into our player fees so there will be no charge to attend any of the hitting clinic sessions. We do not, however, budget the pitching or catching clinics so there will be a $90 charge per player (total amount for six sessions) should you decide to sign up for either of those. The pitching and catching clinics will be run concurrently so pitchers will be throwing to catchers during their sessions. At $15 per 90 minute session, we are confident you will get your money's worth.

Continue below to see more detail on all of these clinics.

Hitting Clinics 2018-19

Leading our hitting clinics this year will be Kirby Pellant from the Ohio State Buckeyes baseball program. Kirby played two seasons for the Buckeyes from 2012-13 and is currently serving as the Quality Control Coordinator for the Buckeyes baseball team for the 2019 season. As a player, he was a 2013 first team All-Big Ten selection during his senior season and was drafted in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, playing in 46 professional games. Kirby works closely with Ohio State’s Matt Angle, who headed our hitting clinics last year, and we are excited to build upon the hitting sessions provided to our UAJBA players last season.

On the chart below, refer to your player's age group across the top to find the sessions available for him/her. You will sign up for these sessions individually. Sign up for as many as you wish but please do consider only signing up for two or three at a time initially as to give everyone a chance to sign up for at least a session or two. And of course, please do not sign up for a spot unless you are sure you are able to attend. We had very few no shows last year and we expect the same this year if you commit to a time.

Pitching and Catching Clinics 2018-19

Brad Goldberg will lead our pitching clinics this winter. Brad pitched for Ohio State in the 2013 season and earned Third Team All-Big Ten honors. He was drafted in the 10th round by the Chicago White Sox and is currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Brad has 200 career professional appearances striking out 325 batters over 300 innings. He spends his offseasons here in Columbus so we are lucky to have him work with our pitchers during the winter as he gets himself ready for spring training.

Brad will be assisted in the clinics by Ryan Riga, who played for Ohio State from 2013-15 and is a current Student Assistant Coach for the Buckeyes. A left-hander, Ryan was Third Team All-Big Ten in 2015 and drafted in the 13th round by the Chicago White Sox making 94 appearances in three professional seasons.

Jalen Washington will head up our catching clinics. A two-time captain for Ohio State, Jalen was drafted in 2017 by the San Diego Padres and played his 2018 season with the Single A Fort Wayne TinCaps. Jalen is a superb athlete who also spent a significant amount of time at shortstop at Ohio State. In his two minor league seasons at catcher, he has thrown out nearly 40% of stolen bases attempted against him.

As mentioned above, note that our pitching and catching clinics will run a little differently than the hitting clinics. Whereas you will sign up for individual hitting clinic sessions at no cost, you will be committing to a six week program for the pitching and catching clinics. We do not budget pitching and catching clinics into your player fees so there will be nominal charge of $90 to cover the cost should you decide to sign up. At $15 per 90 minute session, we believe you will find it a good value. The clinic schedules for pitching and catching are below. Also as mentioned above, the pitching and catching clinics run concurrently so pitchers will be throwing to catchers during their sessions. If a player wants to do both the pitching and catching clinic, they would sign up for pitching on Tuesdays and catching on Thursdays or vice versa. Spaces are limited to 48 pitchers and 24 catchers so we are expecting these spots to fill up fast.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

The UAJBA program is a competitive travel baseball club comprised of UA residents that plays games and tournaments against other travel teams in Central Ohio and beyond. Age groups in 2018 will range from 8U to 15U (see charts above.)  At the younger ages, teams generally will play 30-35 games per season (40-45 games at the older ages) which includes a handful of weekend tournaments. Our goal as a program is to help players improve their baseball abilities while maintaining a positive and fun atmosphere. The regular season generally runs from early April to early July.

What Age Group Is My Player?

We use date of birth and school grade to determine the age group in which your player should be playing. Most of you on the charts below will show a match, e.g. a player born in July of 2006 and going into the 6th grade for the 2018-19 school year is 12U based on his date of birth and his school grade. However, some of you may see a discrepancy, e.g. that same player born in July of 2006 but going into the 7th grade in 2018-19 is 12U based on date of birth but 13U based on school grade. In this instance, we recommend that this player try out for the older age group (13U) in order to stay with his classmates.

So, as a general rule, if reading the charts below results in two different suggested age groups, your player should attend the tryout of the older age group.
